Mew - Comforting Sounds

It's been a few years since I first made associations with this song. Listening to it again throws me back quite unexpectedly to circa late 2007, since, through these years, things have changed but nothing's really changed.

As interpreted so succintly by qbsfinest

"I don't feel alright in spite of these comforting sounds you make.
I don't feel alright because you make promises that you break."
-I'm wary around you because I don't know if you're sincere - you haven't always kept your word before.

"Into your house, why don't we share our solitude?
Nothing is pure anymore but solitude."
-In our solitude we are ourselves, and I just want to be myself with someone else, with you.

"It's hard to make sense, feels as if I'm sensing you through a lens."
-I can't get a good read on you, it feels like you haven't completely opened up to me, like there's a filter between your true self and what you show me.

"If someone else comes, I'd just sit here listening to the drums."
-If our bond is to be interrupted, momentarily or permanently, I'd simply go back to passively listening to the world, making none of my own noise

"Previously I never called it solitude."
-It never used to make me feel so alone, all this acting I do for the rest of the world

"And probably you know all the dirty shows I've put on.
Blunted and exhausted like anyone.
Honestly I tried to avoid it.
Honestly."
-You know all the acting I do in my life. I'm tired of it, just like anyone else. I never wanted to act, but it couldn't be avoided.

"Back when we were kids, we would always know when to stop.
And now all the good kids are messing up.
Nobody has gained or accomplished anything."
-We used to know when to stop acting and be truthful and vulnerable, but everyone has hardened over the years, and this isolation we impose on ourselves from others does not do any good.

You've certainly hardened.
